Big Little School

biglittleschoolDuring the week, Emmaus hosts the Big Little School.

Here’s what they have to say about themselves, and please see their website for more about their work and class offerings:

School History

The Big Little School, one of the first preschools in Eugene, started in 1954.  In 1974, the school incorporated, and in 1975, became a non-profit educational institution.  The school relocated to Emmaus Lutheran Church in 2002 & in 2011 we expanded our program to include Kindergarten.  We pioneered a progressive three-year program which begins with the two-year old and now ends with the child ready for 1st grade. We serve approximately 85 students from the community. Big Little School is certified by the Child Care Division of the State of Oregon, and is operated under the guidance of a Board of Directors with members representing the staff, parents, and the community.

Program Philosophy

Play is the work of childhood.  We feel that in a planned, stimulating environment, play naturally fosters mental, physical, emotional, social, and creative growth.  We want to help each child to be confidant, practice self-discipline, interact positively with others, and above all, develop a positive self-image.  We celebrate cultural diversity, and believe there is a critical link between a child’s early experiences and later success in life.

Our Program

Our program is geared to the interest levels and abilities of 2, 3, 4, and 5 year olds.  During a typical day there are opportunities for exploration, social interaction and unstructured play.  Classes may be involved with music, arts and crafts, numbers and counting, science, language development, physical education and cooperative games as well as theme related activities.  Cooking experiences, field trips or visits from special guests may also be scheduled.

We encourage sharing, self-expression, creativity and respect for others.  Each child is allowed to develop at his/her own pace within our warm and supportive environment.
